About the Service
The Members' Section of the steelonthenet.com website is for registered members only. Registration is free. Members may unsubscribe at any time.

Benefits of the Member Service
Registered members receive occasional promotional offers (including forthcoming conference news) from our marketing partners. Members may also sign up to our free steel industry news alert service. Further member services such as member search / interest groups are also planned - please watch this space.

The Registration Process
Registration should typically take ~60 seconds of your time. Your email address is mandatory, because this will be used at login. Other details can be completed or amended after your initial registration. However, some important fields include:

- salutation so that we know how to address you
- optin which you must tick to enable the News Alert service
- privacy which we suggest you leave blank if you wish colleages to be able to find you [e.g. for job search; consulting support etc] or tick if you wish to remain 'invisible'
- interests where you may enter areas of expertise [e.g. coke ovens] or topics of interest [e.g. shipbuilding]
- password which we set at 'steel' if you do not set this yourself, and which you may later change at any time

About the News Alert Service
The news alert service is a complimentary service from steelonthenet.com. The service provides registered members with a free email alert about news reports that mention a specified keyword. If you enter the keyword 'stainless' for example, you will receive an email if a news story containing the keyword 'stainless' appears on our main news page. Each such news alert contains the title of the news headline, as well as the location (url) of the original news report. Each alert also has a short 1-2 sentence summary of the news report, which is useful if the original report cannot later be accessed. Please note that your keyword can be a single word such as 'stainless', can be a phrase such as 'steel price' or may contain several words (to a maximum of three) e.g. 'hot rolled coil'. Please do not enter a common keyword such as 'steel' however unless you wish to receive 20 or more notifications every day... Note also - all keywords should be entered in lower case text (e.g. iisi) irrespective of how they are likely to appear in any news report (e.g. IISI).

Setting up the News Alert Service
To use the service please simply select 'Switch on/off' from the Alerts section of the main menu, and select option 'START'. Please note that to comply with anti-spam legislation, you need to be 'opted-in' to receive email communications from us. If you are unsure whether you are opted in, please view your record and then edit your preferences as necessary.

Entering /Changing your Interests
Please let us know about your interests, so that we may bear these in mind when adding new sections to the website. As the Member Section grows, we may also launch specialist user groups (based on members' interests) to which you may then be invited. Under your interests, please do not enter the word steel. Please also use singular rather than plural versions of words [e.g. commodity not commodities].

Entering /Changing the keyword
To enter or change a keyword, please select 'Change keyword' from the Alerts section of the main menu. The keyword or phrase should not be entered in quotes / inverted commas. If you can, please enter the singular rather than the plural form of your keyword [e.g. price not prices] for better identification of relevant news reports.

Pausing the News Service
To pause the service [e.g. if you are going on vacation] simply select 'Switch on/off' from the Alerts section of the main menu and select option 'STOP'. You will not receive any further emails until you then restart the service

Restarting the Alert Service
To restart the service simply select 'Switch on/off' from the Alerts section of the main menu and select option 'START'. You will start receiving email notifications if appropriate with immediate effect. Please note that the service automatically restarts when the keyword is changed.

Troubleshooting and the Alert Service
If your alert service does not appear to be working, please remember that news alerts are only sent out every 12 hours. It may be that the full 12 hour period has not yet elapsed, or that there has been no news relating to your keyword. Other common reasons for the news alert service apparently not working are (i) you have not activated the service (ii) as a user, you have not 'opted-in' (see 'setting up the news service' above) (iiii) your selected phrase is quite rare [please try entering one word instead of two or three] or (iv) that the message is being sent to your junk e-mail folder rather than to your inbox. This may happen e.g. if you are using a Microsoft hotmail account. In this case, please reset the system to approve future email communications from us or add 'admin@steelonthenet.com' to your email 'white list'.

To Unsubscribe
Member may stop their subscription at any time. To do so, please select 'Unsubscribe' from the main menu, enter your email address and password, and press 'UNSUBSCRIBE'. You will be unsubscribed immediately. Feel free to check this by trying to login afresh. The system should be unable to recognise you, confirming deletion of your registration details.

Service Reliability
Users should recognise that the service may develop faults or experience interruptions for reasons that are beyond the control of steelonthenet.com. Warnings are built in to system to alert us to malfunctions. Please accept our apologies for these malfunctions in advance.

Terms and Conditions of Membership
Membership is offered at the discretion of our management and may be suspended or withdrawn at any time. Abuse of membership risks withdrawal of site access [via IP address banning]. Other principal terms and conditions of use are that the service is provided as is, without warranties or guarantees. For other terms of service, please see our legal notice.

Use of Member Information
Site visitors should be aware that members' names, email addresses and other contact data may be passed on by Steelonthenet.com to our marketing partners for the purpose of mailshots and similar marketing campaigns by these 3rd parties of steel / metal related product or services. It is therefore probable that registered members will receive occasional emails / promotional materials for metal sector exhibitions, steel industry conferences, related publications, special offers, etc. Please do not sign up to this service if you do not wish to receive promotional communications of this kind.
