Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) is a compacted form of DRI designed for ease of shipping, handling, and storage. It is a steelmaking raw material containing ~90-94% total iron in nearly pure form, used in electric arc furnace (EAF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking and for blast furnace ironmaking applications.

Figures above are HBI production or shipment volumes to 3rd party purchasers [data thus exclude HBI production volumes for in-house use]. Tonnages are metric and describe internationally traded supply. Please note that all figures shown are for HBIA members only; they thus exclude the Libyan Iron and Steel Company (LISCO) which has one HBI module with a rated capacity of ~650,000 metric tonnes/year.

All figures are provided courtesy of the Hot Briquetted Iron Association [www.hbia.org]. For further HBI information kindly please contact Frank Griscom of the HBIA.
