World stainless steel rankings 2009

For the first time ever, an Asian producer is leading SMR’s Annual Stainless Steel Producer Ranking. Shanxi TISCO, also known as Shanxi Taigang, became the world’s largest producer of stainless steel flat products in 2009.  Shanxi TISCO increased its production volume of finished stainless steel flat products from 1.60 million tonnes to 2.16 million tonnes in 2009 (+35 %). For the first time in history, a Chinese company became the world's largest producer of stainless flat products.

POSCO Group holds the second position followed by YUSCO Group. Thus, the top 3 producers are all located in Asia. This underlines the growing importance of Chinese and Asian mills in the global stainless steel market.
