The specialty steel newsfeeds above cover engineering steel (special bar quality; SBQ), electrical steels (silicon; grain oriented and non-oriented), alloy and stainless (including austenitic and martensitic grades) and tool steel (including hot work, cold work and plastic molding).

Special steels differ from commodity steels, being much higher value products, with the prices often being thousands rather than hundreds of dollars per tonne. This difference means that these steels are often economic to transport across quite large distances - which is not always the case with carbon steels. Special steels typically also require specialist steelmaking production equipment and know how; these steels are not usually produced by the commodity steelmakers.
