The charts above show world steel trade flows in 2010 and in 2014. The recent trends in global steel trade are:

  • The increasing importance of steel exports from Asia. Between 2010 and 2014, global Asian steel export volumes increased from ~40mt/year to ~73mt/year
  • The fall over time in Asian steel imports. Asian world steel imports fell from ~26mt/year in 2010 to ~14mt/year in 2014
  • The increasing importance of NAFTA steel imports. Steel imports into the NAFTA region rose from ~18mt in 2010 to ~39mt in 2014.

In terms of internal trade, it is also noteworthy that steel trade flows within Asia increased markedly over the period 2010-2014, rising from ~89mt/year in 2010 to approx. 118mt/year in 2014.
