Other information: Kumba Iron Ore is the successor of Kumba Resources. Kumba Resources was listed on the JSE in 2001. Kumba Resources was reorganized in November 2006 when coal and heavy minerals operations were spun off to two newly-created companies Kumba Iron Ore (heavy minerals) and Exxaro Resources (coal).

Kumba Iron Ore owns a majority of the equity of the Sishen Iron Ore Company (SIOC), with the remainder of SIOC owned by Exxaro, the SIOC Employee Share Participation Scheme and the SIOC Community Development Trust. SIOC owns the operating assets of the business. THese assets principally include the following.

  • The Sishen mine, which is near the town of Kathu in the Northern Cape Province. Sishen is Kumba's flagship operation and one of the largest open pit mines in the world - some 14km long. Sishen mine has sufficient reserves to sustain a 19-year life of the mine. The bulk of Kumba's iron ore production comes from the Sishen mine, with most of it being exported. Mining is by opencast methods.
  • The Kolomela mine, which is near Postmasburg in the Northern Cape Province. Kolomela is Kumba's newest mining operation, having been completed at the end of 2011. Kolomela means 'to dig deeper' or 'to persevere'. Kolomela has a mine life of ~25 years.
  • The Thabazimbi mine, which is near the town of Thabazimbi in the Limpopo Province. The Thabazimbi mine has been in operation since 1931. Mining is by conventional opencast methods. The Thabazimbi mine produces primarily high-grade haematite ore with >62% Fe content.

Kumba's port operations are in Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape Province. Saldanha Bay is the only dedicated iron ore export facility in South Africa and is larger than South Africa's other four major ports combined. The ore quay at Saldanha has two berths where two vessels of 310,000 deadweight tonnage can simultaneously tie up at the iron ore jetty. The terminal operates 24/7 and has the capacity to offload 10,000 tonnes per hour.

Kumba sells its iron ore both domestically and internationally. Export customers are in a range of geographical locations around the globe, including China, Japan, India, South Korea and countries in Europe and MENA. Domestically, the firm sells high quality iron ore to ArcelorMittal SA.
