Today, Mitsui's business involvement spans a number of different sectors that include iron & steel production, mineral and metal resources, infrastructure projects, integrated transportation systems, chemicals, energy, food, and others. Major shareholders as at mid-2018 include the Master Trust Bank of Japan, the Japan Trustee Services Bank, the Japan Trustee Services Bank, the Nippon Life Insurance Company, the Japan Trustee Services Bank and the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.

Mitsui's Mineral and Metal Resources Business Unit supplies iron and steel raw materials (iron ore, coal, petroleum coke, ferroalloys, pig iron, HBI); non-ferrous metals and products (copper, alumina/aluminium, nickel, cobalt, rare metals, titanium); secondary ferrous and non-ferrous raw materials (steel scrap, copper scrap, aluminium scrap, secondary aluminium alloys) and offers clients metal recycling services.

The Iron & Steel Products Business Unit supplies semi-finished steel products (slabs, billets, etc.), flat-rolled steel products (hot-rolled sheets, cold-rolled sheets, coated sheets, electrical sheets), bars, shapes, tubular products, wire rods, plates, automotive steel, special steel, and stainless steel. This division also operates a number of steel processing service centers (processing and distribution operations), steel distribution businesses and an automotive components business.

With respect to iron ore, in 2003 Mitsui acquired a minority equity stake in Valepar, the holding company of Brazil's Vale, the world's largest iron ore producer. Since that time Mitsui have continued to expand their iron ore business with Rio Tinto and BHP in Australia. Key iron ore assets include the Robe River, Mt. Newman, Yandi and Goldsworthy iron ore mines in Australia. Regarding coal, the firm has invested in a number of coal projects - key assets include the Dawson, German Creek, Kestrel, Bengalla, South Walker Creek and Poitrel coal mines in Australia.

Regarding iron and steel production activities, these include special steel manufacturing and sales at Mahindra Group and at the Sanyo Special Steel Co Ltd in India. The firm also has a steel processing and sales business with ArcelorMittal at Gonvarri Brasil S.A. (Brasil); and involvement in steel processing and logistics with the Baowu Steel Group Corporation (China). Mitsui is also involved with Nucor Corporation in investment in steel processing centers across North America; as well as in automotive component manufacturing through a joint venture with Gestamp Automocion, S.L. (operations in Spain, North and South America). Steel distribution in Japan is undertaken through Mitsui & Co. Steel Ltd. Important subsidiaries include Regency Steel Asia Pte Ltd (wholesale and retail supply of steel products), Bangkok Coil Center Co Ltd (processing and sale of steel coil in Thailand), Mitsui Bussan Steel Trade Co Ltd (steel trading, Japan), Shanghai Bao-Mit Steel Distribution Co Ltd (steel distribution joint venture in China), Siam Yamato Steel Co Ltd (steel manufacturing in Thailand).
