Electric Arc Furnace - Technology Trends - Quality

An analysis is shown over time for different steel products of the difficulty of steel production via the EAF production process route. This analysis is sometimes also referred to as electric arc furnace (EAF) steel making technology creep.

Based on market acceptability criteria, the trend analysis shown covers rebar, rail, wire rod, structurals, plate, hot and cold rolled sheet, galvanised sheet, auto body sheet and tinplate across the period 1980-2010.

Note the progress made in the last 30-40 years with respect to the acceptability of the EAF production process route for hot and cold rolled sheet, plate, structurals and wire rod. These trends may be contrasted with the relatively small degree of change over this period in the acceptability of EAF steelmaking for production of automotive quality sheet and tin plate.
