Steel Grade Cross-Reference & Equivalent Finder

International Steel Grades & Grade Equivalents

Search for equivalent steel grades across international standards, covering 118 grade groups across 11 categories. Enter a known grade designation (e.g. A36, S355, 4140, 09Г2С) or browse by steel type and origin standard. Click the ► button on any row to expand full cross-references, mechanical properties and applications.

✓ Why use this tool?

Most grade cross-reference resources list only two or three standards side by side. This tool is different:

  • Eight standards in one lookup — ASTM, EN, DIN, JIS, BS, ISO, GB and GOST are all cross-referenced simultaneously, so you don't need separate lookups for Russian/CIS grades.
  • Mechanical properties included — each grade shows indicative UTS, yield strength and hardness, not just the designation string.
  • Equivalency caveats — where grades are only approximate equivalents (e.g. composition or toughness sub-grade differs), the expanded view says so explicitly.
  • Application context — know where a grade is typically used, not just what it maps to.
  • Search any standard — enter a GOST, GB or DIN designation and find its ASTM/EN equivalent; the search isn't limited to "Western" grades.

Explore by Grade Type

Each grade category in this tool corresponds to a distinct product family. For background on the steels you are looking up, see the relevant essentials guide: structural and long products (rebar, sections, wire rod); specialty steels (engineering alloy, bearing, spring, tool, and high-speed grades); flat-rolled steel (automotive, AHSS, and coated grades); pipe and pressure grades (OCTG, line pipe, boiler tube); and production costs for context on how grade choice affects input economics. Grade capability mapping across standards is also a key input to steel plant SWOT analysis when assessing product monopoly positions. For scrap-based EAF producers, grade requirements directly constrain scrap quality and metallics selection.

How to Use

  • Type any grade designation — partial matches supported across all standards including GOST
  • Filter by steel type or origin standard
  • Summary row shows ASTM · EN · JIS · GOST — click ► for full DIN / BS / ISO / GB details, mechanical properties and applications

🔍 Find Steel Grade Equivalents

Important: Grade equivalents are approximate. Chemical composition, mechanical property requirements and delivery conditions may differ between standards. Mechanical properties shown are typical/indicative for standard heat treatment — always refer to the relevant specification for critical applications.

⚠️ Important Notice

This cross-reference tool is an indicative guide developed by SteelOnTheNet. Grade equivalents are approximations based on published standards and industry practice. Chemical composition limits, mechanical property requirements, testing conditions and delivery conditions may differ significantly between standards even for nominally equivalent grades.

For structural design, safety-critical applications, procurement specifications, or any commercial or regulatory purpose, always:

  • Refer to the full text of the relevant specification
  • Verify chemical composition and mechanical property requirements directly
  • Confirm suitability with a qualified materials engineer or metallurgist
  • Obtain mill test certificates and material certification to the specific standard required

SteelOnTheNet accepts no liability for decisions made based solely on this tool's output.
