Frequently Asked Questions
What does the sentiment score mean?
The score runs from -100 (strongly negative) to +100 (strongly positive). A score above +15 indicates broadly positive news coverage of the steel market; below -15 indicates broadly negative coverage; and scores in between are considered neutral. The score reflects the balance of sentiment-bearing language in recent news headlines and summaries — it is a measure of media tone, not a direct price signal.
How many articles are analysed, and how current are they?
The tool analyses the latest 50 articles from the SteelOnTheNet RSS news feed, which is updated continuously throughout the working day. Each time you click Analyse Sentiment the feed is fetched live, so the score reflects the most recently published articles at that moment.
How is the sentiment score calculated?
Each article's title and description are tokenised and matched against a weighted sentiment lexicon of positive and negative terms relevant to business and industry reporting. Each matched word contributes a score (ranging from ±1 to ±3 depending on intensity), normalised by article length. The individual article scores are averaged across all 50 articles and scaled to the -100 to +100 range. The tool does not use an external AI API — all processing happens in the browser.
What does a negative score mean for the steel market?
A negative score indicates that recent news coverage contains a higher proportion of negative language — references to price declines, demand weakness, trade disputes, capacity cuts, or macro-economic headwinds. It does not necessarily mean steel prices will fall; sentiment and price can diverge, particularly around lagging indicators. The score is best used as a contextual input alongside price data and market fundamentals.
How far back does the score history go?
The history chart can show the last month, 3 months, 12 months, or the full record, which begins on 1 July 2025. One score is logged per day the tool is run. Use the 1M, 3M, 1Y and Max buttons above the chart to switch between views.
Is the tool free to use?
Yes — the sentiment analyser is provided free of charge for educational and reference purposes. No registration is required. The tool is indicative in nature; for investment or trading decisions, always combine sentiment data with primary market research and qualified professional advice.
