2. Arcelor was created from the merger of Arbed (Luxembourg), Aceralia (Spain) and Usinor (France).
3. Polskie Huty Stali (PHS) was formed through the consolidation of four Polish steel companies – namely, Huta Katowice S.A., Huta T. Sendzimira S.A., Huta Florian S.A. and Huta Cedler S.A.
4. Creation of Gerdau AmeriSteel involved a merger of Gerdau's Brazilian operations with those of Co-Steel's facilities in North America. The latter included Co-Steel Lasco in Whitby, Ontario; Co-Steel Sayreville in New Jersey; Co-Steel Raritan also in New Jersey; and a partial stake in Gallatin Steel in Kentucky, a flat rolled mini mill.
5. The name of Japan's JFE Steel derives as follows: the letter J stands for Japan, F is for Fe, the chemical symbol of iron, and E stands for engineering.
6. At the time of the deal, NS-Siam United Steel Co Ltd (“NS-SUS”) was a producer of cold-rolled and hot-dip galvanised steel only; Siam Tinplate Co Ltd. (“STP”) was a producer of tinplate and tin free steel.
7. Note that Ryerson Holding / Olympic Steel transaction was a merger of two steel distributors rather than a merger of two steelmakers.
8. Nippon Steel / US Steel deal was structurally an acquisition (all-cash, USS delisted). Technically however this was a merger executed as a "reverse triangular merger" per US convention under a "merger agreement".
