Steel Industry Project Experience | 48 Countries

Over 25 Years of Steel Sector Assignments

This page records the project work carried out by the MCI Group — MCI Ltd and SteelOnTheNet, the steel industry platform it operates — over the years from 2001 to 2026 inclusive. It is published because experience is verifiable in a way that claims of expertise are not: the counts below are compiled from invoices raised, project by project.

152projects completed
48countries of assignment
118client organisations
25+years, 2001–2026

Each project is counted once, however many stages, phases or invoices it ran to. The record covers single-country consulting, advisory and expert assignments only. Sales of published reports, databases and statistics are excluded, as is regional and multi-country work — including a continuing steel sector specialist retainer held with a multilateral development bank since 2021, under which MCI has carried out steel sector due diligence investigations covering a further eight countries. The real footprint is therefore wider than the figures shown here.

Who Commissions the Work

Client type records the party that commissioned and paid for the work. Where an assignment was commissioned through an intermediary for an identified end client — a consultancy acting for a government or a development bank, for example — the end client is used.

Client Confidentiality — And the Clients We Can Name

Most MCI engagements are covered by confidentiality undertakings, and a substantial number touch on live transactions, restructurings or legal proceedings. We do not identify clients, assets or counterparties without permission, and several assignments are omitted from the record above for that reason. That discipline is part of what makes us usable in sensitive situations; see our code of conduct and data security framework.

The following clients may be named:

  • African Foundries Limited, Nigeria
  • African Investment Group, Nigeria
  • Caparo Steel Industries, United Kingdom
  • Deloitte Svetovanje d.o.o. (Ljubljana), Slovenia
  • EBRD, United Kingdom
  • Egyptian Iron & Steel Company, Egypt
  • Gulf Bank, Kuwait
  • İskenderun Demir ve Çelik A.Ş., Turkey
  • Ministry of Industry, Ethiopia
  • Oesterreichische Kontrollbank OEKB, Austria
  • Pacific Steel Group, United States
  • Tosyalı Holding A.Ş., Turkey
  • Union Steel, Abu Dhabi
  • Vyksa Steel, Russia

Anonymised accounts of individual engagements are set out in our case studies, with client comment on our testimonials page. References are available to serious enquirers under appropriate confidentiality arrangements.

Why This Track Record Matters

Steel sector advice is easy to assert and hard to verify. Three things follow from the record above.

  • Breadth. Work in 48 countries means the reference points behind an opinion are not drawn from a single market. A rebar plant in West Africa is judged against plants we have actually inspected in the Gulf, the Balkans and Latin America.

  • Depth in the same markets. Repeat instruction in the United Kingdom, Turkey, Nigeria, the Gulf states, Poland and the United States over twenty-five years reflects long-term client relationships, not one-off appointments.

  • Independence. The work is commissioned by producers, lenders, consultants, insurers and governments alike — a spread only possible where there are no equipment vendor, trading or producer affiliations to disclose. See our independence policy, technical differentiation and decision support framework.

The people who do the work are named and their backgrounds published: see our expert team, consultants and steel process expertise pages, and the CV of Dr Andrzej M Kotas. The analytical basis for the work is set out in our published methodology.
