Other - The outcome of Mongolia's election next month will have no impact on Rio Tinto's $5.3 billion (4 billion pounds) Oyu Tolgoi copper mine extension plan, the head of country's state-owned joint partner in the deal said on Wednesday. Earlier in May, Rio (RIO.L) gave its long-awaited approval for the costly and complex extension of Oyu Tolgoi, one of the world's largest undeveloped copper projects. Rio is operator of the mine, which is 66 percent owned by Rio's Turquoise Hill arm and 34 percent owned by the Mongolian government through Erdenes Oyu Tolgoi LLC.

Collahuasi and Teck Resources agree to Chile mining partnership

Reuters - Chilean copper mine Collahuasi, owned by Glencore Plc and Anglo American Plc, said on Tuesday it has agreed to a partnership with Canadian miner Teck Resources Ltd to share resources and infrastructure. Collahuasi, located in northern Chile's copper belt, wants to boost production after years of technical issues and labor disputes. Teck operates the nearby, smaller Quebrada Blanca mine.

Other - The bosses of big mining firms are starting to see potential for new investment as record low margins set the scene for higher commodity prices, they said on Tuesday, marking a change in tone from the focus on cost-cutting and asset sales. Andrew Mackenzie, BHP's chief executive, said the firm was particularly positive on copper and oil but was not just waiting for prices to recover. Speaking at the same conference, Ivan Glasenberg, chief executive of Glencore, said record low sector margins are setting the scene for the next price upswing after a plunge in investment.

Reuters - Global miner Rio Tinto and its partners on Friday gave the final approval to a $5.3 billion expansion of the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia, paving the way for development of what will become the world's third-largest copper mine. The expansion into underground mining is regarded as one of the world's best undeveloped copper projects and will drive Rio Tinto's ambitions to become a major global copper producer. Rio Tinto is operator of the mine, which is 66 percent owned by its Turquoise Hill arm and 34 percent owned by the Mongolian government.
