Global steel output is on a rising trend.

World crude steel production for the 70 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 149.2 million tonnes (Mt) in July 2026, a 0.3% decrease compared to July 2025.

Africa produced 2.0 Mt in July 2026, up 6.1% on July 2025. Asia and Oceania produced 109.4 Mt, down 1.2%. The EU (27) produced 10.5 Mt, up 3.8%. Europe, Other produced 3.7 Mt, up 5.8%. The Middle East produced 3.8 Mt, down 13.4%. North America produced 9.6 Mt, up 4.9%. Russia and other CIS plus Ukraine produced 6.7 Mt, up 2.2%. South America produced 3.6 Mt, up 2.8%.


Global 2025 Steel Production

In 2025, global crude steel production amounted to 1850 million tonnes of which some 961 mt (~52% of the world total) was produced in China (source: World Steel Association).

The World Steel Association (also known as worldsteel) is a non-profit organisation with headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. A second office in Beijing, China, opened in April 2006.

The Association has members in every major steel-producing country/ It represents steel producers, national and regional steel industry associations, and steel research institutes. Members represent around 85% of global steel output.

The WSA was founded as the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) in July 1967. It changed its name to the World Steel Association in October 2008. The Association celebrated its 50th year anniversary in 2017.
